Research interests

My research interests are in biodiversity and conservation biology, including ecological genomics. In doing so, I use a suite of methods from monitoring to genomic approaches and study a wide array of organisms.

I focus on the exchange between research and application/outreach and the implementation of scientific results in conservation management and landscape planning, e.g., regarding the ecological infrastructure of Switzerland. I also supervise the large monitoring program of the nationally important habitats of Switzerland WBS.

Projects

Turbulent blood flow

Arterial blood flow highly non-trivial because it is pulsatile and vessel geometries are flexible. The latter may be reduced through ageing, a condition that is known as arteriosclerosis. Is blood flow in older patients more turbulent because arterial elasticity is reduced?

Lebensraumkarte historisch

In diesem Projekt wird untersucht, ob es möglich ist, die Kartierung der aktuellen Verteilung der Lebensräume durch die Kartierung der historischen Situation für die Jahre 1950, 1980 und 2000 zu ergänzen, d.h. eine Periode mit zunehmender Landnutzungsintensität und abnehmender Biodiversität.

Evidence-based amphibian conservation

In this project, we analyze how local and landscape-scale characteristics influence the blue-green infrastructure used by amphibians and how well newly constructed sites contribute to it.

Superstructures in turbulence

Large coherent vortices are easily distinguishable by human eye when looking at clouds in the sky or at the whirls of water in rivers and lakes. We develop coherent structure identification methods to detect these vortices and understand their role in mixing stratified flows in lakes and the ocean.

Fluid structure interaction in pulsatile flow

The aim of this project is to elucidate the transition to turbulence in pulsatile flow through compliant conduits and aorta replicas.
