The study commissioned by the Federal Office for the Environment examines the challenges experts see for landscape development in Switzerland. Flurina Wartmann and Marcel Hunziker interviewed experts from various fields such as architecture, agriculture, tourism, spatial planning, urban development or nature conservation on the basis of guided interviews and an online survey.

The challenges identified by the experts range from a lack of implementation of the Land-use planning legislation to a lack of an integral view of landscape in planning, to financial disincentives through direct agricultural payments.

The results of this study provide important insights that support policy-makers, practitioners and researchers in identifying the challenges in landscape development in Switzerland and thus taking measures to overcome them successfully.
