WebSnow

The overall goal of WebSnow is to study the feasibility of using webcam data as reference for (i) increasing the spatial resolution and accuracy of snow cover maps derived from Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data and (ii) assessing the snow depth from image matching data (e.g. from Pléiades). The used outdoor webcam images from the Bergfex network, consisting of hundreds of webcams distributed over the Alpine region, provide high temporal (~every 15 minutes) and spatial (<10 m) resolution and thus offer a huge potential (i) to complement and improve satellite-derived snow information, and (ii) to be used as a reference for improved validation. The assimilation of satellite-derived snow products with snow information from webcams is to our knowledge a totally new approach, and has the potential to significantly improve the quality of high resolution satellite snow products.
