As a result of fresh snow and storm winds, very high avalanche danger widespread
At the end of this last week, 100 to 200 cm of fresh snow has been registered in the mountains. Thus, the snow depths throughout Switzerland are currently far above average.
On Sunday night, the snowfall is expected to intensify. By Monday evening on the northern flank of the Alps and in the Valais, 60 to 100 cm of fresh fallen snow is anticipated, even more from place to place. Storm-strength westerly to northwesterly winds and a sharp rise in temperatures will exacerbate the avalanche situation still further. The SLF has ranked avalanche danger in the following regions for Monday, 22 January, at danger level (5, “very high”):
- large parts of the northern Alpine Ridge
- from Prättigau over the Silvretta into Samnaun
This danger level prevails only very rarely. A great many avalanches, in some cases quite large-sized avalanches, can be expected. These avalanches can reach down into the valleys and place otherwise rarely endangered transportation routes and buildings at risk.
The instructions of public offices and local safety authorities must be heeded. In the regions concerned, it is advised to refrain from skiing and freeriding activities away from secured ski runs.
Also in most of the remaining regions of Switzerland, avalanche danger is extremely critical, ranked “high” - danger level 4.
