During wintertime the snow depth map is ordinarily published on Thursdays at around 9.30 am, but it appears more frequently if necessary. It shows the calculated snow depth in a 1 x 1 km grid, based on measurements taken by the SLF and MeteoSwiss. The applied algorithm takes into account both the dominating influence of the topography and the local measurements.
On days with little cloud, the measurements, if available, are supplemented by NOAA-AVHRR satellite data collected by the Remote Sensing Group at the University of Berne. A snow coverage map is calculated from the satellite data in Berne. This mapping data is used when calculating the snow depth map as well, and produces a clearer dividing line between the bare and snow-covered areas.
