Integrating alternate host plants and vectors in the modeling approach of the Flavescence dorée epidemiology

 

The Flavescence Dorée (FDp) is a phytoplasma disease and its epidemic has been long time exclusively associated with the transmission from vine to vine by the leafhopper Scaphoideus titanus. In recent time, the existence of alternative FDp vectors and related host plants (e.g., Clematis vitalba, Anus glutinosa, Corylus avellana) have been reported. We propose to i) develop detailed protocol for providing a spatial-explicit cartography of possible FDp hosting plants in the vineyard surroundings; ii) monitor the potential role of woody species as phytoplasma hosts; iii) build a database on the putative FDp alternative vectors; iv) suggest risk-adapted monitoring and FDp control measures. To implement the proposed study, we will select six vineyards in southern Switzerland (three cultivated with the tolerant variety Merlot and three with susceptible varieties such as Chardonnay or Pinot noir) where the FDp is regularly registered, despite the mandatory control campaign.
