Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL)

Eidg. Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft WSL

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) takes an interest in the use, shaping and protection of near-natural and urban habitats. It seeks to promote the responsible use of the natural landscape and forests, and to enable people to deal with natural hazards judiciously, especially those that arise in mountainous countries. The WSL ranks among the international leaders in its fields of research, and makes its fundamental knowledge available for the formulation of sustainable environmental policies in Switzerland.

Together with its social, business and academic partners, the WSL develops strategies for resolving societal issues. It adopts an approach that overarches and crosses disciplinary boundaries; this practice-oriented research methodology is one of its key strengths.

The WSL engages in joined-up thinking and action. It fosters close cooperation with the institutes in the ETH domain as well as national and international partners, while pursuing an active dialogue with researchers, practitioners and the general public.

The WSL employs around 500 people in Birmensdorf, Lausanne, Bellinzona and Davos (at the SLF – the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research). It is a government research centre and belongs to the ETH domain.
