Snowpack Stability MapThis product exists only in German, French and Italian. This map contains snowpack analyses interpreted by experts. These snowpack examinations are conducted at precise times in precise locations. A general map shows the snowpack examinations as assigned to three stability categories, together with text describing the snowpack stability in the Swiss Alps. More detailed snow profiles can be retrieved by clicking on individual symbols. The snowpack stability on an individual slope cannot be described because it can vary from one place to another and the volume of available data is insufficient. On the other hand, the regional snowpack stability at the time the profiles were taken can be evaluated generally, based on a number of snow profiles. The information contained in the Snowpack Stability Map is subject to certain limitations: - The information refers to the time the profile was taken. If the condition of the snowpack does not change, the information can remain valid for a prolonged period. If, on the other hand, new snow has fallen and not yet bonded well with the old snowpack, the snowpack stability changes and the validity of the information is restricted. In any such case, the snowpack will have become thicker and usually itself changed in the period since the profile was taken and the map was produced. - The volume of information varies. Some regions generate more information and more current information than others. - The Snowpack Stability Map is generally updated at the beginning and middle of each month and can be consulted only on the internet. |
