Capabilities and limitations of Avalanche Bulletins

The Avalanche Bulletins indicate the slope areas that are likely to be especially critical. Measurements taken at the observer stations and the other available documents are useful tools, but only for assessing the regional avalanche danger. Details relating to small areas cannot be reported in either the Regional or the National Avalanche Bulletins. Furthermore, when the weather is changing rapidly, it is impossible comprehensively to reflect the development of avalanche danger as regards either timing or location. The accuracy of both weather forecasting and the subsequent prognosis of the avalanche danger can be compromised by inaccurate assessments. The correlation that exists between the regional danger level, possible avalanche activity and the relevant consequences (precautions when travelling in backcountry terrain) must be locally determined by the individual user of the Avalanche Bulletins.
