Publication frequency and validity

In the winter months the avalanche danger is continuously analysed according to the principles and in keeping with the European Avalanche Danger Scale. New Avalanche Bulletins are published each day at 8.00 am and 5.00 pm. The National Avalanche Bulletin (publication time 5.00 pm in German, 6.30 pm in French, Italian and English) remains valid for 24 hours in normal circumstances. Only in exceptional circumstances, when unexpected significant changes take place, is the National Avalanche Bulletin revised the next morning between 9.00 and 10.00 am. The Regional Avalanche Bulletins (publication time 8.00 am) remain valid until 5.00 pm the same day.

The first National Avalanche Bulletin of the winter season is normally published in mid-November. The final edition appears at about the end of May, usually just after Whitsun. The Regional Avalanche Bulletins are published from December until April. The avalanche warning service monitors the avalanche situation in the summer and during the winter months. If critical situations occur in summer and/or during the months at the beginning and end of the winter season, with heavy snowfall at high altitudes or significant snowfall down to the tree line, Avalanche Bulletins are published for the specific situation. As a rule, these describe the avalanche danger in words, rather than by reference to a danger level. An SMS subscription service is available that notifies subscribers of situation-specific Avalanche Bulletins in the summer.
