Metamorphism of snow near the surface

New snow remains powdery during prolonged time during cold weather. New experiments using micro-tomography and a movie made of the images show the changes explaining for he first time, why new snow is not always „aging“ and becoming more dense.

Producing nature-identical snow

Artificial snow made with snow cannons differs a lot from natural snow. We are able to produce nature-identical snow in our cold-laboratories in Davos by supersaturating cold air.

Detection of grain boundaries in snow from 3D images

Grain boundaries play an essential role in snow mechanics. As the weakest link in the structure they have a huge impact on snow properties. We present a method to identify grain boundaries in three dimensions from volumetric micro-CT images based on their characteristic neck-like shape.

Snow replica method for three-dimensional X-ray microtomographic imaging

Snow samples are cast in the field to conserve their structure. The ice is sublimated in a high vacuum. The remaining negative can be visualised by X-ray microtomography.
