Critical avalanche situation - No improvement in sight

Sad result: dozens of avalanche accidents and 7 deaths in less than a week. Cause of the critical avalanche situation is the snow from Christmas, which rests on very weak old snow.

Avalanche courses - Annually in December

The SLF offers an annual programme of basic and advanced training courses to people working in the avalanche services or as an SLF observer. Also this December about 75 persons are taking part in the courses.


Avalanche warning - Daily avalanche bulletins

With immediate effect the SLF is once again publishing the avalanche bulletin and interactive danger map daily at 5 pm. These products are available both on the SLF website and with the White Risk app. From mid-December at the latest the avalanche bulletin will be issued twice a day, at 8 am and 5 pm.


WSL-Magazine - Nr. 2 has been published

The second issue of the WSL journal DIAGONAL has been published. It is focusing on the topic of aridity.


Glacier Garden Lucerne - Special exhibition on avalanches

The special exhibition 'Avalanches: White glory, White risk' will be presented at the Glacier Garden in Lucerne from November 15th 2013 to September 14th 2014. The exhibition shows the many aesthetic aspects of snow and avalanches but also conveys essential information on avalanches and avalanche prevention. It is the result of a collaboration between the University of Teacher Education Lucerne (PH Lucerne), SLF and SUVA.


New Publication - Compendium of snow

On November 5, the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF hosted a launch event for its most recent book. Published in German by Primus Verlag, the illustrated volume entitled "Schnee" provides a unique insight into the fascinating world of snow. The book launch in Chur was jointly organised by the local environmental research organisation Naturforschende Gesellschaft Graubünden and the Schuler Bücher bookstore.
